The image reproduces Henricus Hondius’s celebrated 1630 Nova Totius Terrarum Orbis Geographica ac Hydrographica Tabula, one of the great decorative world maps of the Dutch Golden Age. Its twin hemispheres are surrounded by elaborate allegorical scenes, ships, cartouches, a celestial globe and portrait medallions, all rendered in a warm palette of aged gold, green, ochre and burgundy. The original map was produced in Amsterdam and introduced into the Mercator-Hondius atlas tradition in the 17th century.
This later reproduction is beautifully presented beneath glass in a substantial gold-tone frame with black matting, creating the look of a collected antique map while making it highly decorative for an interior. The large format works especially well above a console, desk or cabinet, or as part of an old-world gallery wall.
