An exceptionally ornate vintage German mantel clock, combining a mechanical Europa movement with an elaborate sculptural gold-tone case.
The openwork case is richly decorated with scrolling forms, classical figures and cherub-like details, creating the dramatic appearance of an antique Baroque or Rococo object. At its center, the circular brushed-gold dial features black Roman numerals, pierced hands and a domed crystal.
Marked EUROPA, 2 JEWELS and GERMANY, the clock contains a traditional hand-wound mechanical movement. Europa produced a variety of German mechanical desk and table clocks during the mid-20th century, including 2-jewel movements like this example. Comparable Europa clocks are generally dated to the 1950s–1970s. Catawiki
The elaborate freestanding case gives this example considerably more decorative presence than the small travel clocks most often associated with Europa. Beautiful on a mantel, bookshelf or console among collected brass and European decorative objects.
Details:
Era: Circa 1960s–1970s
Material: Gold-tone cast metal, glass, metal clock components
Condition: Good vintage condition with age-related patina, oxidation and finish wear throughout. Mechanical clock is working.
Dimensions: 8.5 in H × 6 in W × 2.5 in D
