Full of texture and character, this vintage woven donkey is intricately constructed from natural plant fiber and decorated with miniature terracotta jugs and colorful textile trim.
The donkey is formed almost entirely through tightly twisted and braided fiber, from its long upright ears and expressive head to its legs, hooves and tail. A bright red and yellow fringed band wraps around the body, complemented by red yarn reins that add a lively contrast to the natural straw.
Two miniature terracotta vessels are carried in woven holders along the sides of the donkey, recalling the traditional pack animals once used to transport water, wine and other goods. Each tiny vessel has its own individually formed handles and wonderfully rustic surface.
Age-related fraying and irregularities throughout the woven fibers add to its handmade character. A charming piece of vintage folk art for a shelf, collected interior or grouping of handmade objects.
